BEYOND ABORTION

A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE

As a licensed attorney for well over fifty years, I see the reversal of “Roe vs. Wade” by our current SCOTUS to be a disaster to the legal system I have served all my professional life. The consequences of this ruling reach far beyond the issue of abortion.

Justice Clarence Thomas announced in his concurrence with the majority opinion that he has his sights on “reviewing” (ie, reversing) current laws regarding same sex marriage and contraception.

Will use of contraception be outlawed? How far into personal life will the current “conservatives” seek to insinuate themselves? The reversal of “Roe” is the first reversal of previous Constitutional rights in the history of this nation. What currently established legal rights will be next?

Conservatives and their GOP have traditionally prided themselves on seeking small, noninvasive government. They now take the opposite position. They are rapidly moving toward establishing the biggest, most invasive government conceived by man — dictatorship.

While I do not favor abortion, I respect a woman's right to make decisions regarding HER body. Her body belongs to her and not to the government.

Many people do not appreciate the full meaning of “Roe vs. Wade”. I knew Henry Wade, Dallas District Attorney. He did not see the SCOTUS ruling in “Roe” to be a personal defeat.
