HUMANS — A SPECIES WITH TWO MINDS
LEFT BRAIN/RIGHT BRAIN DISTORTIONS
Most of us know each of us possess two brains, left side and right side. These brains are separate but connected, and designed to function together, although each has its specializations.
These two brains contribute to two distinct ways of thinking, but they are designed to function together in harmony they in a balanced, wholistic manner. Those who chose to emphasize left brain dominance have difficulty with wholistic thinking which comes more naturally for the right brain.
When one side becomes dominate, mental processesis grow increasingly out of balance, leading to difficulty. How this occurs is still a bit of a mystery. It has not been determined that genetics dictate dominance of one side over the other. Environmental influences and degrees of choice seem to me to be significant causal factors.
The establishment of one side dominance appears to me to be primarily determined by environment and early learning. The learning child observes the thinking around it by parents and other important adults, and tends to learn to function in a manner deemed pleasing to these adults, and aids in communication.
Thus, a learning atmosphere of what we call “conservative” or “right wing” thinking seems to contribute to the choices children make as to what way of thinking leads to less conflict, and they tend to adapt that thinking process. This process is equally true for inclinations toward right brain, more “liberal” thought.
