IMPERFECT DEMOCRACY DEFINED
Democracy is defined as “Control of an organization by a majority of its members”. This is not the case with our federal democracy. For us it is common for the declared winner to receive fewer votes than the looser.
This is a result of the well intentioned but ill conceived idea expressed in Article II of the Constitution know as The Electoral College. The intent was to give all states regardless of population an equal power in the election. The result has been to dismiss the national popular vote.
Consequently, we de not have a Federal Democracy where the majority of voters prevails. The Electoral College has proven to be an undemocratic process.
It has placed states of smaller population in control of the majority of voters. This is an imbalance contrary to the concept of National Democracy.
The fix will also be imperfect, but it will bring us closer to a true Democracy. Yes, the Electoral College must go.
