AN EMPIRICAL APPROACH

Some will ask, “How can paranormal be addressed empirically?” This is our subject, first asking, “Can it?”As you may have guessed from my title, “Yes”.

The aspect of “paranormal” I here focus on falls under the general category of “psi”.

What is psi? The word is derived from the first letter in the Greek word Psyche, meaning soul. It is primarily defined as paranormal manifestations beginning with ESP. The word “psi” was coined in 1942, but it has been studied for many years under other labels.

First, although most of you have a working definition of “paranormal”, I present a few examples.

First, and most commonly known, is our experience of Extra Sensory Perception.

Although typical conservative science still tends toward denial of authentic ESP, this position is no longer acceptable.

ESP has generally to do with the acquisition of information by inner visualization, auditory input, mind effects on matter, forecasting future events, mind to mind transfer of data, describing distant events, all without access by our five senses.

Also included is gathering the history of a material object or place simply by touch or close proximity.
