Sensible and quite possible. It sems to me those creatures that thrive as a society of creatures do so throw mutual cooperation. Crocodiles are hardy individuals,but do not form societies as do honey bees. It is through societies that evolution produces higher intelligence. Honey bees show far more intelligence than crocs. But, there are many unknowns, some of which we do not even know are unknowns (re: Rumsfeld).
