The fact that science is more enlightened now than in the past does not reduce it to meaninglessness now. Scientific consensus now has great meaning, especially when the science is able to support its opinions with relatively simple evidence the layman can understand.
Being a well experienced geophysicist may present a bias for me, but I suggest you look more closely at the evidence supporting the MEANINGFUL consensus.
