This story has the feel of truth, so I'm in the same position a you. This drama fits well into my theory of "Boxes in the mind". Many may contain intelligent competence, while others that are always closed, contain opinions based on belief, and will not allow in for consideration facts contrary to the beliefs encased in the closed box.

This is my explanation for highly accomplished, very intelligent and experienced professionals vearing off the track on subjects like politics, religion, "paranormal", or any other subject where their belief system ignores facts and concludes only on the basis of belief. Boxes of wisdom, boxes of foolishness, all in the same brain. Closed boxes containing conclusions based on belief are protected by fear.
